Observational manifestations of young neutron stars: Spin-powered pulsars
نویسنده
چکیده
The largest number of known young neutron stars are observed as spin-powered pulsars. While the majority of those are detected at radio frequencies, an increasing number can be studied at other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum as well. The Crab pulsar is the prototype of a young pulsar which can be observed from radio to gamma-ray frequencies, providing a red thread of discussion during a tour through the pulsar properties observed across the electromagnetic spectrum. The basic observational features of pulsar emission are presented, preparing the ground for more detailed reviews given in these proceedings. Here, particular attention will be paid to those emission features which may provide a link between the radio and high-energy emission processes.

X-ray Spectra of Young Pulsars and Their Wind Nebulae: Dependence on Spin-down Energy
An observational model is presented for the spectra of young rotation-powered pulsars and their nebulae based on a study of nine bright Crab-like pulsar systems observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory. A significant correlation is discovered between the X-ray spectra of these pulsars (PSRs) and that of their associated pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), both of which are observed to be a function ...
متن کاملSoft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars: Together Forever
I review of the observational properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs), two unusual manifestations of neutron stars. I summarize the reasoning for SGRs being “magnetars,” neutron stars powered by the decay of a very large magnetic field, and the now compelling evidence that SGRs and AXPs are in fact members of the same source class, as predicted uniquely by t...
متن کاملMillisecond Pulsars in X-Ray Binaries
Despite considerable evidence verifying that millisecond pulsars are spun up through sustained accretion in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), it has proven surprisingly difficult to actually detect millisecond X-ray pulsars in LMXBs. There are only 5 accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars known among more than 80 LMXBs containing neutron stars, but there are another 11 “nuclear-powered” mil...
متن کاملNeutron Star Kicks in Isolated and Binary Pulsars: Observational Constraints and Implications for Kick Mechanisms
We study observational constraints on neutron star (NS) kicks for isolated pulsars and for neutron stars in binary systems. We are particularly interested in the evidence of kick-spin alignment/misalignment and its dependence on the neutron star initial spin period. For several young pulsars, X-ray observations of compact nebulae showed that pulsar proper motion is aligned with the spin directi...
متن کاملPulsars and quark stars
Members of the family of pulsar-like stars are distinguished by their different manifestations observed, i.e., radio pulsars, accretion-driven X-ray pulsars, X-ray bursts, anomalous X-ray pulsars/soft gamma-ray repeaters, compact center objects, and dim thermal neutron stars. Though one may conventionally think that these stars are normal neutron stars, it is still an open issue whether they ar...
